Why the Modern Diet Often Needs Supplementation

If only we could rely on the foods we eat to provide us with all the nutrition – macrobiotic, microbiotic and mineral – that we need. Even if you tried to eat perfectly, including only buying organic foods and never eating highly processed junk foods, you’d likely still miss out on some important nutrients. That’s why it’s a bad idea to rely on your diet alone and not supplement with vitamins and herbs.

The Standard American Diet

Nutrient deficiency has become a widespread epidemic. In times past, people had diseases like scurvy or blindness simply because their diets lacked vitamins like C or A. Though it may seem outlandish, these kinds of diseases, and many more, are happening all because the Standard American Diet doesn’t provide the high level of plant phyto-nutrients, healthy fats, antioxidants and other key minerals to assimilate all the good things we need, helping the body fight chronic disease.

Loss of Soil Health

Even if you eat only “healthy foods,” the adoption of genetically modified crops in so much of our farmland has caused our soil to be “sick.” Just like us, plants have an immune system. They rely on the nutrients in soil and microbiota to fight against pests, fungus, mold and even drought. When the soil is raped of these nutrients, plants contain fewer nutrients. Their immunity goes down, and so does ours.

Farmers now plant the same crops over and over (a practice called mono-cropping), which depletes our soil of vitamins, minerals and healthy bacteria.

Soil is alive and due to mono-cropping, the use of copious herbicides, pesticides and chemical fertilizers, our food is nothing like it was 100 years ago. It takes 500 years for nature to build two centimeters of living soil and only seconds for us to destroy it.

Steve Solomon stated in The Intelligent Gardener: Growing Nutrient-Dense Foodthat most people could "live past age 100, die with all their original teeth, up to their final weeks, and this could all happen if only we fertilized all our food crops differently."

It boils down to the loss of important minerals and vitamins in our soil. If our soil doesn’t have these things, then neither does our food.

Our Water is Contaminated and Depleted

Our water contains so many contaminates today that it can make your head spin. In an effort to remove all these toxins, most water filters also remove important minerals such as magnesium, which is essential for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body.

Up until recently, clean, unfiltered fresh water was the main source of magnesium for humans. This is no longer true. Our water is filtered of essential minerals like magnesium, contaminated with chlorine and fortified with potentially harmful chemicals like fluoride and so much more. These chemical toxins also chelate important minerals that we do manage to get from our bodies.

In an Effort to Reduce Calories, We Reduce Nutrients

Many people who eat “healthy” today are eating “low-fat,” or “non-fat,” reduced-calorie foods. Diet companies are notorious for selling people low-calorie food that has no nutrients! For example, a low-fat snack may not have as many calories, but it also won’t contain healthy fats like Omega 3s, or the many nutrients found in foods normally considered “high fat” and “high calorie” like nuts or fatty fish.

Also, when you purchase low-fat milk, or cheese, for example, any of the nutrients disappear, since the vitamins and minerals most often appear in the fat.

We Eat Factory-Farmed Meats

Compared to grass-fed meat, grain-fed meat (usually genetically modified grain) is abysmally low in antioxidants, micronutrients, fatty acids, minerals and vitamins.

Animals fed a mostly grain-based, GM diet, while also being pumped with antibiotics and steroids, as well as growth hormones, also impede our body’s ability to absorb nutrients by causing gut inflammation, along with an imbalanced microbiota in our digestive system.

Even if you removed all of these bad things from your diet, there are still more reasons you could benefit from good supplementation with high-quality herbs, vitamins and minerals.

-       We are exposed to Xenoestrogens in the form of plastics, BPA, molds, petroleum products and more. These substances mimic estrogen in the body and mess up our endocrine system, which is responsible for everything from regulating our sleep cycles to making sure we aren’t constantly stressed out, and even eating too much.

-       We use toxic chemicals in our homes in the form of beauty products and cleaners. These chemicals also cause our bodies not to absorb vitamins, minerals and important nutrients we need to function at our best.

-       We live most of our days in unnatural light, rarely getting outside to benefit from the sun’s rays. This means we rarely get enough Vitamin D.

-       We rarely get enough sleep. This can cause oxidative stress on the body. Without good supplements that provide antioxidant support, we age faster and are more prone to disease, even cancer.

-       Stress is at an all-time high. The adrenals churn out hormones, such as cortisol, which raise blood pressure and blood sugar (among other things) when we are stressed out. Cortisol makes us crave junk food. which means we are much less likely to eat a nutritionally dense diet when we’re anxious about our jobs, families, health, or the myriad other things we worry ourselves about.

-       Even if you work out, and stay active to counteract obesity, your body needs more nutrition, not less when you are active.

-       As we age, hydrochloric acid and digestive enzyme production naturally declines, making it hard for us to break down and absorb nutrients from the foods we eat.

As you can tell, relying solely on your food for the nutrients you need simply won’t cut it. That’s why supplementation is a good idea if you live and breathe in the 21st century.

BeHerbal aims to provide high quality supplementation for people just like you.
